The Tech Sector
The tech sector is one of the most exciting industries for healthcare professionals seeking a career pivot. We consider tech to encompass everything from telehealth to robotics to digital health to user experience.
There is quite a bit of overlap between tech and other sectors, such as business, healthcare, education, or even entrepreneurship. For example, you could work in a healthcare tech company that leverages technology to improve healthcare communications or streamline billing processes. Or, you could work for a digital healthcare company that focuses on wearables or 3D motion tracking. You might hold an educational or training role, or you could work in client success, sales, or content creation.
Yes, there’s plenty of crossover with other industries, but we consider tech to be its own sector because the defining factor of tech is, well, technology. Sure, you can do education, or sales, or compliance, or customer success, but if you’re working in the tech industry, you’ll be living and breathing technology.
That means you need to be a fast-thinking, fast-acting, dynamic sort who can quickly pick up new skills and learn new tools to make your day more productive. The tech world reaches from tiny startups to major corporations like FAANG. “What is FAANG,” you might ask? Facebook, Amazon, Apple, Netflix, and Google!
Pros and cons of the tech sector
Every industry has its pros and cons, and we’d be remiss if we recommended you pursue a specific sector without sharing the bad along with the good. Here are a few pros and cons you’ll find working in tech.
Pros
- Dynamic – The tech sector is exciting, dynamic, and ever-changing. You’ll always be learning, and you’ll rarely (if ever) feel bored.
- Flexible – Tech is one of the easiest sectors to enjoy flexible working hours and remote privileges.
- Opportunity – There is a ton of opportunity to grow, earn more money, and grow your skills. If you’re hungry to learn, work hard, and build your career, tech can give back what you put in and then some.
- Rewarding – Working in the tech sector can feel very rewarding, as many tech companies are mission-driven and include lofty goals of changing the world in a meaningful way.
Cons
- Unstable – Layoffs are a fact of life in any industry, but they seem to impact the tech world more than other non-clinical sectors.
- Stressful – The pace of life in the tech world can be a bit much. But if you’re used to a busy clinical environment, this might not faze you!
- Competitive – Tech is a notoriously competitive industry, and when you factor in things like ageism and workplace politics, it can feel like a rude awakening compared to clinical life.
- Tiring – Tech hours are typically flexible, but that often comes at a cost: you’re often working long hours…even if some of those hours are whenever you darn well please.
